Don't Worry, You'll Laugh Later

I have to admit, this issue has really spurred the sailing bug. We did a test sail on a beautiful day off Anacortes, and gave out the 48° North/Harken Top 25 awards after a beautiful day's racing at Blakely Rock. Maybe it's the term "beautiful day" that has something to do with it. And with the temperature in the 50's, it was down right hot. Amazing how a little direct sunlight can grow a smile.
Plus, in reading all the stories entered in our Anchoring Story Contest (Lewmar/Yacht Masters), you can't help but get a case of the "I remember whens…" I'm sure when you read them it will definitely cause a conversation. We've all been there, maybe not exactly - I've never dropped my anchor in a bottomless ocean or fallen overboard trying to untangle from the chaos of a crowded anchorage - but is there anyone out there who hasn't run around the boat checking the anchor set in the middle of the night in nothing but their underwear? You haven't? Don't worry, you will.
Then, of course, there's the certainty that, after hundreds of perfect docking and anchorings with no one else around, there will be an appreciative crowd to enjoy the spectacle the one time you really mess up.
Ah yes, all part of the fun and excitement of sailing. Whether it's running over your spinnaker in a race, or hauling up some form of alien mud-monster that devoured your anchor, it's what makes for great stories. Of course it may be a while before you can laugh about it, but laugh you will, or at least smile.
No doubt they'll be a few broken pieces, lost this and that, bumps and ?bruises for you and the boat, but as long as everyone is safe, they're just ?inconveniences, sort of a cover charge for the big show of summer sailing.
