Mind Set More of a Sail Set

First, let me apologize in advance. I am about to talk about how beautiful it is in the Northwest in August. I know, I’m running the chance of jinxing the whole thing but I can’t help it. The other so called summer months don’t always deliver. Remember the of.cial .rst day of summer? It may have been summer on the calendar but it was monsoon season outside. Yes, I know we needed the rain but…Northwesterners, along with our “Southwestern” friends above the line, persevere through the grey fall, winter and spring months to bathe in the lifegiving rays of the summer sun, not shower in mother nature’s power washer.
There are few places to sail like the Northwest in August. With the sun comes color and cruising. The monotone shades of blue and grey become vibrant greens and blues, and boats crowd the waters like .owers blooming on a hillside, all seeking the sun. And, of course, we’re blessed with superb cruising grounds within a day or two from most major concentrations of boats.
Why am I blathering on and on? Well, as I sit here trying to type, my eyes keep turning to the window; a Catalina 27 is headed south around West Point, a gaggle of boats has just gotten out of the locks and is heading north past Shilshole. All set against a background of water, mountains and a cotton ball sky. It’s getaway time and my mind has already hoisted the sail.

48° North Celebrates Its 24th Anniversary

It’s hard to believe we’re almost halfway into our third decade of 48° North. Once again we raise our glasses to the many sailors who’ve shared their experiences with us; sailors who have taken their dream to the blue waters, local sailors doing extraordinary things on the world stage; and especially the good people who hoist the sails after work, on weekends cruising and racing on the beautiful waters of the northwest. You are the heart of 48° North.
It costs a lot to put out a free magazine and we heartily thank our advertisers for keeping us in paper and ink. We greatly appreciate it when you tell them you saw their ads in 48° North. Thank you all and a big wet kiss from Publisher Chuck Streatch, Ad Manager Michael Collins, Accounts Manager Nancy Very, Classi.ed Manager Jane Larson, and Associate Editor Karen Higginson, who magically make it all happen every month.
