Gunkholing in the San Juan Islands

A Comprehensive Cruising Guide encompassing Deception Pass to the Canadian Boundary. New and Improved Edition.

Jo Bailey and Carl Nyberg
308 pages

Just released in January 2000, this new release by Jo Bailey and Carl Nyberg is the latest edition in their series of popular Gunkholing books. Both are Seattle natives whose combined cruising experience in Puget Sound, San Juans Islands and British Columbia waters amounts to a century of exploring. Currently they cruise their 35' Chris Craft sloop, Scheherazade. Aside from their books, you may know Jo and Carl as the authors of the monthly destination column in 48° North Sailing Magazine.

The new book covers in detail the cruising grounds between Deception Pass to Point Roberts, and the 800 islands of the greater San Juan Islands area. You'll feel like you're sailing along with Jo and Carl as they bring these places to life with detailed histories and stories, with lots of personal experiences thrown in. Those new to these waters will find the 300 plus pages of this book invaluable in planning your time in the islands, which is why you'll find the Gunkholing books onboard most local boats and as a staple of the charter fleets in the northwest. There are twelve chapters, each one devoted in detail to a particular island or area, with lots of charts and pictures to tell you not just how to get there, but also give you a taste of the unique flavor of the place as well. What I personally enjoy most are the miriad of special little out of the way places "gunkholes" to discover and explore that make cruising in these waters some of the best in the world.
