For the 15th year, 48° North is pleased to present the Top 25 Boats of Puget Sound, and it's the sixth year for our Can-Am Top 5.

The Top 25 deals with boats racing on the waters of Puget Sound, while the Can-Am Top 5 involves boats sailing in both Canadian and U. S. events.

            [Can-Am 5]

To determine the Top 25 for 2001 we pulled together the results of six series of races sailed on the waters of Puget Sound. The following events were selected to be used in scoring each boat: South Sound Series, Center Sound Series, Puget Sound Sailing Regatta, Puget Sound Sailing Championship, Tri-Island/Tri-Point Series and the PITCH Regatta.
During the process, the performance of over 360 keel boats, sailing in one or more of the events identified, was tracked. That list was then trimmed down to those boats sailing in four or more of the events to qualify for our Top 25 selection. A boat's four best performances were then used in calculating her score. That number was determined by scoring a boat one point for finishing and one point for each boat that she beat in her class. The points earned by a boat in her best four events were then divided by the points she would have earned if winning all four of those events. The final number become her "batting average."
For the Can-Am Top 5 selection, the same scoring method was used as for the Top 25. However, to qualify a boat had to start in each of the three events that were selected: Southern Straits Regatta, Straits of Juan de Fuca Regatta and Whidbey Island Race Week. These three events tend to draw 20-25% of their entries from across the boarder.
Top 25 and Can-Am Top 5 are not a subjective selection based on a boat or skipper's performance in other years, or a one or two shot win in a couple of races during the season. Each boat in the listing has had to earn its position based upon its actual performance on a number of different race courses and sailing conditions.
We want to thank Kelly O'Neil for providing pictures of each boat, they really bring the list to life. So here it is — your Top 25 Boats of Puget Sound and Can-Am Top 5 for 2001 season.
