Top Sailors, Seahawks, Sea Stories and Swaps

There's nothing sailors enjoy more than...football. Okay, that may be a bit skewed, but with records for days of rain being repeatedly threatened, there's few that have the temerity (South Sound Series sailors notwithstanding) to suffer weather that would make Noah wish he'd brought more supplies. So what's the answer for a winter sailor? Boat Shows. However, this year's celebration of things that float was altered a bit by the success of the Seattle Seahawks, thus the connection, sailing-football. So, at the time of this writing, we can burn off some of that pent up winter sailing energy by rooting on the home team in the Super Bowl. You don't get to say that everyday. Actually, if you're reading this before they play the game, we'll be joining you huddled around the TV like cavemen worshipping fire. For those of you that receive your 48° North at the whim of the Post Office, wasn't that an amazing game?
Back to boating. This year Harken joins us in honoring our Top 25 boats by providing some very nice trophies. These will be presented at the Seattle Corinthian Yacht Club following the Blakely Rock Race, March 4. It's a great way to start off the season (South Sound Series sailors notwithstanding) and a chance to get a look at the remodeled clubhouse in its new location. One boat we'll be honoring is Wayne Berge's J-35, The Boss, who was unfortunately omitted from the list due a missing result.
Now that you've had a chance to see all the nifty new stuff at the boat shows, it's time to get rid of the old stuff and/or pick up some boating bargains at the 48° North/Fisheries Supply Boater's Swap Meet, April 8. It's truly a great time to find that gear you may or may not need. If you're selling stuff, the challenge is to leave with less than you came with. Bring your flashlight for those crack-of-dawn deals. Details
Entries are coming in for the Anchoring Story Contest (see opposite page). Lewmar and Yacht Masters are offering some very nice prizes so write down those terrifing, awkward, memorable moments that, in hindsight, are pretty funny. 48° North will be at the Vancouver Boat Show, February 8-12, running the Harken grinder, so stop by, say hello, and do your best grinding. Added style points for bumping.
Still another event will be the Abraxus Books Nautical Nights. You're invited to join Tony in his bookstore behind West Marine Shilshole, underneath 48° North, for an evening with boating writers. The first night is February 15, at 6 pm. when he'll present Jo Bailey and Carl Nyberg of the Gunkholing cruising book series. Details page 32.
So, lots of things coming up. Here's wishing the Seahawks smooth sailing, and see you at one or all of the above events.
