A Meeting That Bears Repeating

48° North is pleased to once again host the Marine Event meeting between the Coast Guard and race committees/event organizers for the yacht clubs. As personell changes year to year, both in the yacht clubs and the Coast Guard, it’s essential to get everyone on the same page when it comes to safety on Puget Sound and surrounding waters.

All yacht clubs should have been notified of the meeting, but if you haven’t, consider this your invitation. Race committee chairs and others from your club who are responsible for putting on events are more than welcome. Commander LCD Wickman and Marine Permit Officer PO Knappe and others from the Coast Guard will be there to discuss event permits, deadlines for submitting race applications to the CG, transit lanes and more.

Last year’s meeting was very informative and enjoyed by all. A little wine, beer and snacks help keep the tone of the meeting light and fosters a free and friendly exchange of ideas and information. There was no “us versus them” attitude but groups of people truly working together to keep the sailors happy and safe. A simple phrase, but far from easy to do.

Granted, the power here all lies with the Coast Guard. But being clear on what is expected makes the job of Race Committee Chairman much easier. Plus the fact that, should a violation in the paperwork or on the water occur, the Coast Guard is aware that the club is sincerely trying to put on the safest event possible. For instance, if a racer should force a commercial ship or ferry to take emergency action, the Coast Guard knows that, along with their own penalties, the club will hold that individual responsible and take action, such as banning them from racing for a year.

This is just one example of how the Coast Guard and the yacht clubs working together will ensure an enjoyable and safe 2008 racing season.

The meeting will be held:

Monday, February 4th at 6 PM
Abraxus Books (old ballard library)
5711 24th Ave. NW, Seattle
