Tracking the racing results of almost 500 boats from Olympia, Washington to Vancouver, B.C., our Top 25 rewards not just the occasional bullet, but consistant, top-notch sailing. The following eight major sailing events were tracked during 2006 in our effort to find our Top 25 Boats: Center Sound Series, Puget Sound Sailing Regatta, Puget Sound Sailing Championship, South Sound Series, Southern Straits Classic, Swiftsure International Yacht Race, ?Tri-Island Series and Whidbey Island Race Week.
We tracked one boat as one entity; if you’ve changed boats or boat names, sorry, it’s off the radar. Likewise, if you were out of the area and unable to compete in four events, your boat was not counted.
This Year Ed von Wolffersdorff handed over the reins, or rather the computer mouse, of this daunting task to Gary Stuntz of Clear Ahead Sails who has been shadowing Ed’s list for years and now steps in as our numbers guy.
Performance of all boats sailing in one of more of the above eight events was tracked with a boat’s best four event performances being used for calculating her final position. Then, if two boats were tied, and there were many, the average fleet size was considered. Average fleet size (AFS) was determined by taking a boat’s average fleet size in each event, adding them together for a final average fleet size. So, when boats were tied in the final scoring, we considered the fleet sizes and listed the boat with the larger fleet ahead of the other.
In an attempt to make more boats eligible for next year, we’re adding two popular and well attended events to the above list for scoring in 2007: Seattle Yacht Club’s Star&Bar Regatta, and Bellingham Yacht Club’s PITCH Regatta.
Our goal to reward participation and consistantly top-end sailing. Each boat has earned her spot in our list based upon her performance in a number of regattas and varied sailing conditions. Finally, our hats are off not only to all the outstanding skippers and crews on our Top 25 list, but to all of you out there racing our challenging Northwest waters. Photos by Borrowed Light Images.
