"Oh My God, We’re Sailing Trekkies!"


      Last month my daughter went to an Anime convention, where fans of Japanese fantasy cartoons came to share their love of the genre, many dressed as their favorite characters. I likened them to the Star Trek conventions, the "Trekkies" for the next generation. Pretty weird, but whatever makes you happy.
      In April we had a booth down in Oakland, at the Stictly Sail boat show, and during a lull in the action I looked out at the show goers and thought maybe my daughter isn’t as weird as I thought. Here’s a group of people with diverse interests, brought together because they’re fans of wind power. They were even dressed as their favorite characters, if you will. Greek fisherman’s hats and beards marked a cruiser; stylish embroidered vests and form fitting sunglasses adorned the racers.
      But that’s stretching it a bit. I can't really liken sailors to Trekkies. We are a much more conservative and integral part of society, sharing a common bond – a love of wind and water. And this month we celebrate the start of our special time of year, the boating season. In Opening Day of Boating Celebrations all over the Northwest, people will be gathering, boats decorated in themes, people all outlandish costumes …
