Tursi, who has sailed across all of the world's major oceans, went on to say that 'Preparation is the way to avoid trouble and to increase enjoyment when sailing sophisticated yachts in remote areas away from the distractions and support of modern society. This summer, The Maryland School will conduct two advanced coastal training cruises starting in Anacortes, through the San Juan Islands and make several stops in the Canadian Gulf Islands before returning to Anacortes. These will be aboard Full Moon, an Island Packet 40' sailing yacht, and will be of eight days duration each. Cruise #1 dates are July 28-August 4 and Cruise #2 are August 7-14, 2001 and will be Skippered by Captain Bill McClure, a USCG Licensed Master with over 150,000 miles of blue water ocean sailing under his keel. $1,300 fee includes onboard food. Wind Works Sailing Center is a full service sailing organization featuring sailing instruction, continuing education, an active sailing club and sailboat brokerage. Sailing classes are designed in a progressive manner - from beginning classes on small daysailers to advanced classes on large cruising sailboats. All Wind Works classes carry US Sailing certification, which is the national standard for sailing instruction. The courses include: Basic Keelboat (24-hour course - small 25' keelboats with tiller steering and outboard engines), Basic Cruising (24-hour course - large, 30'-36' aux. powered sailboats with wheel steering and inboard engines), Coastal Navigation (16-hour course), Bareboat Cruising (designed to take your big boat handling skills into multiday charters) and Coastal Passegemaking (expands bareboating skills to the next level of difficulty and skill). The advantage of the sailing club is that you can build on each level of learning with ongoing personal chartering experience at the club. The class program schedule itself is very flexible, allowing each student to progress through each level and complete some individual sailing at their own pace. Scheduled classes run year round, except for the last two weeks in December. The sailing club offers availability and access to a fleet of 25 to 43 foot sailboats for its club members to charter by the day, or longer periods, to practice their ongoing sailing skills learned in class, and/or enjoy cruising after sailing skills and certification are achieved. The club also features extensive ongoing education, group sailing activities, socials and more in a very cost effective way.

If you're interested in having fun and learning to sail, the Wooden Boat Foundation will teach you to sail up wind in just a week! Since 1994, our Community Sailing courses have introduced more than a thousand adults and children to the thrill of sailing. The Foundation is now taking registrations for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced sailing classes from June 17 to August 23, taught by US Sailing certified instructors. A three week residential maritime exploration and adventure program, Summer Youth Sea Camp gives students ages 14-18 an introduction to boat building, sail making, boat handling, sailing, rowing, marlinespike seamanship, navigation, tides & currents and lots of fun! Over the years, this signature program of the Foundation has taught maritime skills while offering experiences which lead to a passion for the sea, boats, and the life lessons they provide. The SYSC experience begins by exploring and camping in the San Juan Islands on one of the Foundation's 26' historic replica longboats. Students learn to row, sail and navigate while meeting the challenges of seamanship in an open boat. Next, commuting by boat from their camp at Fort Flagler State Park, participants work alongside the skilled boatwrights of the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding and sailmakers of our local marine trades community building a boat and its sail. The camp finishes by joining the crew of the 101' gaff-rigged schooner Adventuress, built in 1913, to sail the waters of Puget Sound. While on board, students receive instruction in marine biology, coastal navigation, marine weather and marlinespike seamanship. Summer Youth Sea Camp runs from August 2-22. The program enrollment is limited to 10, so early registrations are encouraged. Tuition of $1860 includes Learn sailing and seamanship aboard a traditionally built and rigged vessel. Bryony, a 45' Bristol Bay Channel Cutter and Martha, a B.B. Crowninshield 68' staysail schooner yacht. Adults have the option of five and seven day Sail Training courses, youth choose from four, five, six or eighteen day courses.

Since those days the training program has grown steadily to include adults. Training is based on standards established by the Canadian Yachting Association for its 'Learn to Sail' program, which combines theory instruction in the classroom with a maximum possible amount of time spent on the water. It provides a progression through various levels of proficiency from the beginner to the advanced racing sailor, successful completion on each level is marked by White, Bronze, Silver and Gold Sail awards. While adult courses are naturally less structured than those for juniors, an effort is made to provide instruction at a level appropriate to the experience of the class and, where demand is sufficient, an intermediate adult course is offered.
