Everyone is always talking about the rules but Ed actually knows what they are. Ed von Wolffersdorf is a Senior USYRU judge and every month since 1985 he’s been giving us examples as to what you can and can’t do under the Racing Rules.




Our favorite old man of the sea, Hewitt R. Jackson, has been a joy to know these many years, and his historical articles have been a real conduit to the past for 48° North readers.




As a surveyor, Tom Averna has delved into a lot of boats, and for many years he’s shared his knowledge with us in his Ask the Surveyor column. Busy with his whale watching business, his column appears when the whales go away.

Kelly O’Neil Henson was 48° North's primary photographer for over 15 years until she was tragically taken from us in 2004. This simple but elegant portrait of Kelly by renowned artist Jim DeWitt, captures her vitality and her ever-present lens. The loss of Kelly and the subsequent outpouring of feelings by the sailing community, both on and off the water, was one of the most poignant moments in Northwest sailing.
When Karen Higginson first started, there was a small problem with keeping her working at her desk. This was easily solved with some triple B chain and a lock.
